Drinking clean, fresh water is a need that everyone must fulfill. Some people recognize that drinking water benefits their bodies and overall well-being and they consume it on a regular basis. Other people may never really consider the importance or benefits of water and only drink it as a result of thirst. While both groups consume water, only one may be getting the amount that his or her body requires. The fact is the human body is made primarily of water. That is why it is critical for people to consume it regularly. To understand the importance of this, people must understand the benefits of drinking water and the downside of not drinking enough. Doing this will encourage them and their families to take in the fluids that their bodies require on a daily basis.
There are many benefits of drinking water, with the most important being the effect that it has on one's health. In order to understand the health benefits of water, people must first understand why water is needed in the first place. The human body is made up of approximately sixty percent water, and water makes up seventy-five percent of the brain's mass. Over the course of a day, people lose some of their body's fluid through perspiration, urine, bowel movements, and even while breathing. This lost water must be replaced to ensure that the body's systems continue to function as they should. Water benefits and assists the body in regulating its temperature, and it also boosts energy. The digestive system requires water to produce saliva, and it helps with the break down of food so that the nutrients may be absorbed. It aids kidney function and allows for the removal of waste in the form of urine. Water also helps prevent constipation and maintains normal bowel movements. Drinking water benefits people who are trying to lose weight by giving them a feeling of fullness that reduces hunger. Water also does not contain empty calories that can contribute to excess weight. In addition to the many health benefits of water, it also benefits the skin by improving elasticity and giving it a healthier, less dry appearance.
The human body can only go one week without partaking of the benefits of water before death occurs. Even if a person does drink water, but in insufficient amounts, it can result in a number of health problems. A person who doesn't drink enough water will suffer from dehydration, which can cause muscle spasms, migraines, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, difficulty breathing, and constipation. Dehydration can also cause heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Other complications include kidney stones, kidney failure and falling into a coma. In order to take advantage of the health benefits of water, people must take in enough fluids on a daily basis. One simple way to do this is to drink between eight and twelve glasses of water or other liquid a day. Alternatively, some researchers and health officials suggest going by one's gender and age. For example, men between 19 and 50 should drink thirteen cups of water a day while women within the same age range should drink nine. Other researchers recommend adults drink 2.5 quarts of water daily.
These guidelines may not be enough, however, depending on the person's activity at any given moment and the amount of energy that is expended to perform it. Exercise, for example, uses up a lot of energy and causes excess sweating, and as a result, people lose vital water quickly. Drinking additional water benefits people by replacing the extra fluids that are lost from physical exertion. To ensure hydration, people should drink an additional eight ounces of water thirty minutes before the activity starts. While exercising, drinking another four to eight ounces for every twenty minutes of exercise time is also crucial. People can determine if more water is needed by weighing themselves before and after exercising. If the scale shows that they have lost weight following the exercise, they should drink sixteen ounces of water for every pound that was lost. Other ways that people lose water include heat from hot days and illness that causes vomiting and/or fever. Diarrhea also causes people to lose water and can result in dehydration.
Although getting enough water is important, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. People should strive to stay within guidelines and not to over-hydrate. Drinking too much water may cause people to suffer from what is called water intoxication, in which sodium levels drop or remain the same while water levels in the body rise. This causes swelling of cells including cells in the brain. As a result, people may experience convulsions, hallucinations, confusion, loss of appetite, and potentially death.
Drinking water benefits people in the way that they both look and feel. Regular consumption helps replace fluids that the body naturally loses, and it ensures the normal function of the body's systems. Carrying filled water bottles throughout the day and drinking water at meals helps to make it a healthy habit. People who carry bottled water benefit for the convenience of having it within reach and can easily stay properly hydrated. Understanding the health benefits of drinking water and taking the right steps is the best way to encourage oneself and one's family to routinely drink healthy amounts of water daily.
